In plain words

−$0.65bn

What it is. FDI inflows count the money foreign investors put into businesses in Botswana where they hold a lasting stake. It is built from new equity, reinvested profits and loans from parent companies. The figure is net, so capital withdrawn and loans repaid to foreign parents are subtracted, and the total can fall below zero. Shares bought on the stock market sit outside it.

Higher is better. Higher is better because more foreign capital pays for mines, plants and equipment, and a negative total means foreign owners took out more than they put in. The latest figure for 2025 is a net outflow of $0.65bn, against an inflow of $0.58bn in 2024, a swing of $1.2bn in a year. It is the lowest reading since 2016 and sits at the bottom of its range over that span. The high in that range was $0.74bn in 2023.

Why it matters. A net outflow means foreign investors withdrew more money from Botswana businesses than they added. Firms that rely on foreign parents for fresh funding have less to spend on expansion, and that limits new jobs for households. The state gets less outside capital to support growth and the foreign currency that comes with it.
