In plain words

$2bn

What it is. This measure counts the money foreign investors put into Ivorian businesses in which they take a lasting stake, after subtracting money taken out. It adds up new share purchases, profits reinvested locally and loans between foreign parent companies and their Ivorian subsidiaries. Bank lending, short-term share trading and bond purchases sit in other accounts and are left out. Because it is a single annual flow in current dollars, one large deal can move a year's figure noticeably.

Higher is better. More foreign direct investment means more outside capital for plants, infrastructure and jobs without the repayment burden of a loan, so a higher figure is better. The latest figure, for 2025, is $2bn, down from $3.1bn a year earlier, a fall of 35.1%. Since 2016 the series has ranged from a low of $0.58bn in 2016 to a high of $3.1bn in 2024. The 2025 inflow sits well above the bottom of that range and clearly below the peak, which was reached the year before.

Why it matters. A smaller inflow means fewer new factories, processing sites and service operations funded from abroad, so Ivorian firms and the state lean more on domestic savings and borrowing for the same projects. Households feel this mainly through hiring, since new foreign-backed businesses are a source of formal jobs. The next annual figure will show whether $2bn is a pause after the 2024 peak or a lower level that persists.
