In plain words

$15.5bn

What it is. FDI inflows count the money foreign companies and investors put into businesses in Egypt in which they hold a lasting stake, net of money pulled out. The figure comes from balance of payments records and covers new equity, reinvested profits and loans between a foreign parent and its Egyptian affiliate. Share trading on the stock exchange and ordinary bank lending are outside it. A single large acquisition or property deal can move a whole year's total, so the series can jump around.

Higher is better. More foreign direct investment means more outside money going into factories, energy projects, property and companies, and it brings in foreign currency along with it. For that reason a higher figure is better. Inflows were $15.5bn in 2025, down from $46.6bn a year earlier, a fall of 66.8%. Since 2016 the range runs from a low of $5.1bn in 2021 to a high of $46.6bn in 2024. The latest figure sits well above that low and far below the peak.

Why it matters. Foreign direct investment is one of the main sources of dollars for Egypt. It helps pay for imports and supports the pound. A drop from $46.6bn to $15.5bn leaves less foreign capital for new projects and jobs, and the state has less external financing to lean on. Inflows are still well above the $5.1bn of 2021, so the 2025 level is a step down from the peak and a long way from the bottom of the range.
