In plain words

$0.84bn

What it is. This measure counts the money foreign investors put into businesses in Mali where they take a lasting stake. It covers new equity, profits reinvested locally and loans between a foreign parent and its Malian subsidiary, net of money withdrawn. Short-term portfolio flows and ordinary bank lending sit outside it, and the total gives no breakdown by sector or by investor.

Higher is better. More inflow means more outside capital for mines, factories and services than Mali's own savings could fund, so a higher figure is better. The latest figure, for 2025, is $0.84bn, down from $0.92bn a year earlier, a fall of 8.4%. Since 2016 the range runs from $0.36bn in 2016 to $0.92bn in 2024. The 2025 figure is more than double the low and sits close to the top of that range.

Why it matters. Inflows of $0.84bn bring foreign currency into the economy and pay for equipment and construction that Malian firms would struggle to finance alone. The state gains from the taxes and jobs that follow. The fall from the 2024 peak is the figure to check next year: a second decline would suggest the 2024 high was a one-off.
