In plain words
$5.8bn
What it is. FDI inflows count the net amount foreign investors put into businesses in Mozambique in a year, measured in current US dollars. The figure covers new equity, reinvested profits and loans between a foreign parent and its local affiliate, minus money withdrawn. In a country where a few very large energy and mining projects dominate, one financing decision or loan drawdown can move a single year's total sharply. Portfolio flows into shares and bonds are left out, as are domestic investment and the value of what the projects eventually produce.
Higher is better. Higher is better here because more foreign direct investment brings in foreign currency, funds plant and equipment, and usually creates jobs and supplier work. The latest figure for 2025 is $5.8bn, up from $3.5bn a year earlier, a rise of $2.3bn or 64.2%. That is the highest reading since 2016 and sits well above the low of $1.7bn in 2018. The latest year is therefore at the top of its range over the whole span.
Why it matters. A $5.8bn inflow gives Mozambique a large source of foreign currency, which helps the country pay for imports and supports the metical. For firms, it means more contracts for construction, logistics and services around the big projects. For the state, it points to future tax and royalty income once projects start producing, though a single year of high inflows can fall back if a major project's financing is completed and no new one replaces it.
