In plain words
$4bn
What it is. FDI inflows count the money foreign investors put into businesses in Nigeria through equity purchases, reinvested profits and loans from parent companies. Money taken out by foreign owners is subtracted, so the net figure can fall very low or turn negative in a weak year. Share and bond purchases on the stock market sit outside the measure. Because it is reported in current US dollars, price changes and exchange rates also move the number.
Higher is better. Higher is better because a larger inflow means foreign owners are committing more capital to Nigerian companies, plants and projects, and bringing foreign currency with it. The latest figure, for 2025, is $4bn, up from $1.6bn a year earlier, a rise of 148.2%. That is the highest reading since 2016, the start of the window. The lowest in the same span came in 2022, so the latest year sits at the top of its range and far above that trough.
Why it matters. More foreign investment gives Nigerian firms a source of funding for equipment, expansion and hiring, and adds to the dollars available in the economy. For the state, a $4bn inflow eases some of the pressure on external finances compared with the weak year of 2022. Whether the 2025 level is repeated in the next annual reading is the item to check.
