In plain words

$3.4bn

What it is. FDI inflows count the money foreign investors put into businesses in Uganda: new equity, profits kept in the country and loans from parent companies, net of money taken back out. The figure is in current US dollars, so price changes over time are included. Portfolio flows such as shares and bonds bought on markets are excluded, as is investment by Ugandan firms and households.

Higher is better. More foreign direct investment brings in capital, equipment and skills that Ugandan firms would otherwise have to find at home, so a higher figure is better. The latest reading, for 2025, is $3.4bn, up from $3.1bn a year earlier, a rise of 7.8%. Since 2016 the lowest figure was $0.63bn, recorded in 2016, and the highest is the latest $3.4bn. The current level therefore sits at the very top of its range for that span.

Why it matters. At $3.4bn, foreign investors are putting substantial money into Ugandan projects, which supports construction, hiring and the supply of foreign currency for imports. Firms that receive this money can expand with less reliance on local bank borrowing. The state gains tax receipts and export capacity as these projects mature. The next annual reading will show whether inflows hold near $3.4bn.
