In plain words

1.5% of GDP

What it is. Manufacturing value added is the value factories and workshops create after subtracting the materials and services they buy from other firms. It is shown as a share of the whole economy's output, so it follows how much of national income comes from making things, such as processing food or producing goods for sale. Output from small informal producers is hard to survey and may be only partly counted.

Higher is better. A higher share is better because it points to more domestic processing, more factory jobs and a broader base of production. The latest figure is 1.5% of GDP for 2024, down from 1.7% a year earlier, a fall of 0.25 percentage points. Since 2015 the range runs from 6.3% of GDP in 2015 to 1.4% of GDP in 2022. The 2024 reading sits just above the bottom of that range and far below where the series began.

Why it matters. At 1.5% of GDP, manufacturing supplies only a small part of what The Gambia earns, so most manufactured goods used by households and firms are bought from abroad. Prices for those goods then depend on import costs and the exchange rate. Few factory jobs exist to absorb new workers, and the state collects little tax from industrial output.
