In plain words
8.3% of GDP
What it is. Manufacturing value added is the value a country's factories create, meaning their output minus the cost of the materials and services they buy in, expressed as a share of the whole economy. Because it nets out inputs, it shows how much new value domestic production adds. It covers formal and informal factory work in the national accounts, but it does not count the value of imported goods sold in shops or the processing that happens inside farms and services.
Higher is better. A higher share is better because manufacturing tends to bring steadier jobs, more export potential and more varied output than an economy leaning on raw commodities. Nigeria's latest figure is 8.3% of GDP for 2025, down from 8.7% of GDP a year earlier, a fall of 0.4 percentage points. Since 2016 the range runs from a low of 8.1% of GDP in 2020 to a high of 9.6% of GDP in 2018. The latest reading therefore sits close to the bottom of that range, only a little above the 2020 low.
Why it matters. At 8.3% of GDP, factories account for a small slice of what Nigeria produces, so households rely heavily on imports and on sectors outside manufacturing for goods and work. Firms that make things locally compete with imported products and carry the cost of power, transport and materials. For the state, a thin manufacturing base means a narrower set of industries to tax and fewer products to sell abroad.
