In plain words
11.4% of GDP
What it is. Manufacturing value added is the value of what factories produce minus the cost of the materials and services they buy in. It is shown as a share of GDP, so it tracks the weight of manufacturing in the whole economy rather than the volume of goods made. Mining, construction and utilities are counted in other sectors.
Higher is better. A higher share is better because more of the economy is then turning raw materials into goods, which tends to lift productivity and create steadier jobs. The latest figure is 11.4% of GDP for 2024, down from 11.8% of GDP a year earlier, a fall of 0.42 percentage points. It is the lowest reading since 2015. The highest in that span was 14.9% of GDP in 2015, so the share has drifted down over the period.
Why it matters. A smaller manufacturing share means less national income comes from factory work, which usually pays more regularly than casual trade or small-scale farming. Firms that process goods have a smaller part of the economy to sell into and to draw suppliers from. For the state, a thinner manufacturing base gives it fewer formal firms to tax. The next reading shows whether the share recovers above 11.4% of GDP.
