In plain words
22.9% of GDP
What it is. This measure counts the value that farming, forestry and fishing add to the economy, which is the output of those activities after the cost of inputs such as seed, feed and fertiliser is taken out. The result is shown as a share of GDP, so it moves with the size of every other sector as well as with the harvest. Factory processing of crops and the trade and transport of produce are counted under industry and services, so the figure covers primary production only.
Neither way is good in itself. A falling share can mean services and industry are growing faster than farming, and a rising share can mean a strong harvest or slower growth elsewhere. The direction alone therefore carries no verdict. The latest figure is 22.9% of GDP for 2025, down from 24.2% a year earlier, a fall of 1.3 percentage points. It is the lowest level since 2016, which is the start of the window. The highest in that span was 28.5% of GDP in 2021, so the share has come down a long way from that peak.
Why it matters. At 22.9% of GDP, farming still makes up a large part of Benin's output, so weather, harvests and crop prices carry real weight for rural household incomes and for national growth. The lower share than in 2021 suggests that other sectors now account for more of the economy. Farm output remains a major influence on how much the economy grows from year to year.
