In plain words

16.8% of GDP

What it is. This measure takes the value of what farms, forestry operations and fishers produce, subtracts the inputs used up along the way, and divides the result by the value added of the whole economy. It covers crops, livestock, timber and fish. Turning crops into manufactured goods is counted in industry, so the share reflects primary production. The share also shifts when other sectors grow faster or slower, even if farm output is unchanged.

Neither way is good in itself. A higher share can reflect a strong farm year or slower growth elsewhere, and a lower share can reflect a diversifying economy or a weak harvest, so the direction carries no verdict by itself. The latest figure, for 2025, is 16.8% of GDP, up 0.9 percentage points from 15.9% a year earlier. Since 2016 the share has ranged from a low of 15.7% of GDP in 2019 to a high of 17.9% in 2018. The current reading sits in the upper part of that range, a little under the 2018 peak.

Why it matters. At 16.8% of GDP, farming remains a large part of what the Ivorian economy produces, so harvests, weather and crop prices reach many household incomes, especially in rural areas. For the state, a sector of this size shapes export earnings and tax receipts, and a good or bad season moves overall growth. The rise from 2024 means agriculture took a larger slice of national output this year than last.
