In plain words
8.9% of GDP
What it is. This measure counts the value that farming, forestry and fishing add to the economy, which is their output minus the inputs bought in, and expresses it as a share of GDP. Food processing, transport and sale of produce are counted under industry and services. The share is a ratio, so it moves with the size of the rest of the economy as well as with harvests, timber and catches.
Neither way is good in itself. A higher or lower share can each reflect different things. A falling share can come from weaker farm output or from faster growth in other sectors such as mining, and a rising share can come from a stronger harvest or from a slump elsewhere. The latest figure, for 2025, is 8.9% of GDP, down from 10.1% of GDP a year earlier, a fall of 1.2 percentage points. It is the lowest reading since 2016. The high over that span was 13.7% of GDP in 2020.
Why it matters. Many Congolese households draw food and income from farming, forestry and fishing, so a smaller share matters most where other sectors offer few jobs. For the state, a share of 8.9% of GDP means more of the tax base and export earnings now depends on sectors outside agriculture. Whether the 2025 fall reflects weaker farm output or stronger growth elsewhere can be checked against the sector's volume figures for the same year.
