In plain words

16.8% of GDP

What it is. This measure counts the value created by farming, forestry and fishing, meaning the value of what is produced after subtracting inputs such as seed and fuel, and divides it by total GDP. Crops, livestock, timber and fish all sit inside it. Food processing, transport and retail of farm goods are counted under industry and services, so the figure covers the farm gate end of the food chain.

Neither way is good in itself. A higher share can mean a strong harvest or weak growth in other sectors, and a lower share can mean a poor farm year or faster growth in industry and services, so the direction alone does not make the figure good or bad. The latest figure, for 2025, is 16.8% of GDP, down from 18.5% of GDP a year earlier, a fall of 1.6 percentage points. Since 2016 the range runs from a low of 16.5% of GDP in 2018 to a high of 18.5% of GDP in 2024. The 2025 reading therefore sits just above the bottom of that range, after the previous year had touched the top.

Why it matters. Farming, forestry and fishing still make up 16.8% of GDP in Cameroon, so harvests, weather and farm prices move national output noticeably. Rural households depend on this sector for much of their income, and a shrinking share raises the importance of jobs and earnings elsewhere in the economy. For the state, the size of the sector shapes how much of the economy responds to rainfall and to prices for farm and forestry products.
