In plain words
36.6% of GDP
What it is. This measure shows how much of the economy's output comes from farming, forestry and fishing. Value added is the sales of these sectors minus the inputs they buy from other sectors, so it counts what the sector itself creates. Food processing, transport and retail of farm goods are counted in other sectors, which keeps the share focused on primary production.
Neither way is good in itself. A higher share can mean the farm sector is growing or that the rest of the economy is small. A lower share can mean other sectors are developing or that harvests have fallen. The share therefore needs context before it can be judged. In 2025 it stood at 36.6% of GDP, up from 36.1% of GDP a year earlier, a rise of 0.51 percentage points. That is the highest figure since 2016, when the share was 31.4% of GDP, its lowest in the period.
Why it matters. At 36.6% of GDP, more than a third of Comoros's output comes from farming, forestry and fishing. Household incomes, especially in rural areas, therefore follow harvests, fishing catches and the prices these goods fetch. For the state, a large primary sector means tax revenue and export earnings are exposed to weather and commodity swings.
