In plain words

5% of GDP

What it is. This measure counts the value that farming, forestry and fishing add to the economy, which is their output minus the inputs they buy in, and shows it as a share of GDP. It covers growing crops, raising livestock, managing woodland and catching fish. Food processing and the shops and transport that move produce are counted in other sectors. The share moves with harvests, fish catches and prices, and also with how fast the rest of the economy grows.

Neither way is good in itself. A higher share can reflect an economy that leans on the land and sea, and a lower share can reflect other sectors growing faster, so the direction alone gives no verdict. The latest figure is 5% of GDP for 2025, up from 4.9% of GDP a year earlier, a rise of 0.09 percentage points. Since 2016 the share has ranged from a high of 6.3% of GDP in 2016 to a low of 4.4% of GDP in 2019. The current reading sits in the lower half of that range, well below where it began.

Why it matters. At about 5% of GDP, farming, forestry and fishing make up a small part of what Cabo Verde produces, so a weak harvest or poor fishing season moves national output only slightly. Rural households and fishing communities that depend on these activities can still feel such a season sharply. For the state, the small share means most revenue and growth depend on other sectors.
