In plain words

19.9% of GDP

What it is. This measure counts the output of farms, forests and fisheries after subtracting the inputs they buy in, such as seed and fertiliser, and divides it by GDP. The share therefore moves with farm output and with the size of the rest of the economy. Food processing is counted under manufacturing, so the figure covers primary production only.

Neither way is good in itself. Neither direction is good by default. A falling share can come from faster growth in mining and services or from a poor harvest, and a rising share can follow a good season or a slowdown elsewhere. The latest figure is 19.9% of GDP for 2025, down from 20.9% of GDP a year earlier, a fall of 0.98 percentage points. Since 2016 the share has ranged from a low of 17.3% of GDP in 2021 to a high of 21.7% of GDP in 2016, so the latest reading sits closer to the top of that range.

Why it matters. At 19.9% of GDP, farming, forestry and fishing still carry a large part of Burkina Faso's national output. Rainfall and harvest swings can therefore move rural household incomes and food supplies. They also affect the state's tax base and the pace of the wider economy.
