In plain words

34.3% of GDP

What it is. Agriculture value added is the output of farming, forestry and fishing after subtracting the inputs bought in, such as seed and fertiliser, shown as a share of GDP. It comes from the national accounts, so the share moves with farm output and with the size of the rest of the economy. Food processing and trade in farm goods are counted in other sectors, so the figure covers production on the land, in the forest and on the water.

Neither way is good in itself. A higher share can reflect an economy centred on farming, and a lower share can reflect growth in industry and services. Either can apply to a country at different times, so the direction needs the context of what is happening elsewhere in the economy. The latest figure is 34.3% of GDP in 2025, down from 35.1% a year earlier, a fall of 0.76 percentage points. Since 2016 the share has ranged from a low of 31.1% of GDP in 2020 to a high of 37.4% in 2017. The 2025 figure sits close to the middle of that range.

Why it matters. At 34.3% of GDP, farming, forestry and fishing remain a very large part of what Burundi produces. Harvests and rainfall therefore carry a heavy weight in household incomes and in national output. A share that keeps falling would point to other sectors growing faster, and the 2020 low of 31.1% of GDP is the nearest mark to compare against in coming years.
