In plain words
40.6% of GDP
What it is. Agriculture value added counts the output of farming, forestry and fishing after subtracting the inputs used up to produce it, then divides that by total GDP. It comes from national accounts, where crops grown for household use are given estimated values alongside those sold. Food processing, transport and trade further along the chain are counted under industry and services.
Neither way is good in itself. A high share can mean a strong harvest, and it can also mean that industry and services are small. A low share can mean those sectors have grown, and it can also follow a poor farm year. The latest figure is 40.6% of GDP in 2025, down from 41.2% of GDP a year earlier, a fall of 0.54 percentage points. Since 2016 the share has ranged from 31.4% of GDP in 2019 to 41.2% of GDP in 2024, so the latest reading sits just below the top of that range.
Why it matters. A share this large means a big part of Guinea-Bissau's output, jobs and household income depends on rainfall, harvests and the prices paid for farm produce. Cashew, the main export crop, shapes the incomes of many rural families and the foreign currency the country earns. The state's revenue also moves with the farming season, because few other sectors yet provide a comparable base.
