In plain words

33% of GDP

What it is. This measure counts the output of farms, livestock herds, forests and fisheries after subtracting the cost of inputs bought in to produce it, and expresses that as a share of the whole economy. The share depends on how farming performs and on how fast every other sector grows. Food processing is counted in manufacturing, and the value of crops eaten by the households that grow them depends on national estimates.

Neither way is good in itself. A higher share can come from a good harvest or from slow growth in mining and services. A lower share can come from a broadening economy or from a poor farming year. The direction alone therefore says little until the cause is known. The latest figure is 33% of GDP in 2025, up from 32.6% of GDP in 2024, a rise of 0.43 percentage points. Since 2016 the share has ranged from a low of 31% of GDP in 2016 to a high of 33% of GDP in 2025, so the current reading sits at the top of its range.

Why it matters. With farming, forestry and fishing at 33% of GDP, rainfall and harvests carry real weight in Mali's national income. Many households earn part of their living from the land, so their spending power follows the season's yields. Public revenue and export earnings also respond to farm output, which makes a good or poor harvest a matter for the budget as well as for rural families.
