In plain words
47.6% of GDP
What it is. Agriculture value added is the output of farming, forestry and fishing in Niger after the cost of inputs used up in production, shown as a share of total GDP. Crops, livestock, timber and fish are counted. Milling, food processing and trade fall under industry and services. The share moves with harvests and prices, and with the size of the rest of the economy.
Neither way is good in itself. A higher share can reflect a good harvest or a small non-farm economy. A lower share can reflect a poor harvest or faster growth in mining, construction or services, so the cause matters more than the direction. The latest figure, for 2025, is 47.6% of GDP, down 0.38 percentage points from 48% of GDP a year earlier. Since 2016 the share has ranged from a low of 36.2% of GDP in 2019 to a high of 48% of GDP in 2024. The 2025 reading therefore sits just under the top of that range.
Why it matters. With farming producing close to half of national output, rainfall, pests and security on farmland shape rural incomes and the price of staple foods in Niger. Households that grow millet and sorghum, and keep livestock, feel a poor season directly. For the state, a farm-heavy economy ties tax receipts and export earnings to the weather, and shows how little of the economy sits in other sectors.
