In plain words
20.3% of GDP
What it is. This measure counts the value created by farming, forestry and fishing in Rwanda, after the cost of inputs such as seeds and fertiliser is taken out, and shows it as a share of GDP. Food processing and the trade in farm produce are counted under manufacturing and services, so the share covers work on the farm and little beyond it. Because it is a share, it moves with the output of every other sector as well as with harvests.
Neither way is good in itself. A falling share can mean industry and services are growing faster than farming, which often accompanies development, while a rising share can reflect a good harvest or slow growth elsewhere. The latest figure, for 2025, is 20.3% of GDP, down from 20.8% a year earlier, a fall of 0.49 percentage points. That is the lowest reading since 2016, and the highest in the same span was 25.6% of GDP in 2017.
Why it matters. At 20.3% of GDP, farming remains a major part of Rwanda's economy, so weather and crop prices still affect national output and the incomes of rural households. The share is well below its 2017 level, which means the economy leans less on agriculture than it did then. Growth in industry and services now carries more weight for jobs and for the state's tax revenue.
