In plain words

29.4% of GDP

What it is. This measure adds up the value that farming, forestry and fishing create in a year, after subtracting the inputs they use, and divides it by the value of the whole economy. In Sudan that mostly means crops and livestock, including grain, oilseeds, gum arabic and herding. Informal and subsistence output is hard to count, so the figure leans on estimates. The share also moves when other sectors such as oil, gold or services grow or shrink, even if farm output stays the same.

Neither way is good in itself. A higher share can mean farming is thriving, or it can mean the rest of the economy has shrunk around it, and a lower share can mean industry and services are growing or that harvests have failed. For that reason the direction carries no verdict on its own. The latest figure is 29.4% of GDP for 2025, up from 22.2% of GDP a year earlier, a rise of 7.2 percentage points. Since 2016 the range runs from a low of 20.2% of GDP in 2019 to a high of 31.8% of GDP in 2017, so the latest reading sits close to the top of that range.

Why it matters. At 29.4% of GDP, close to three in ten units of national output come from the land, so harvests, rainfall and access to farms weigh heavily on household incomes and food supplies in rural Sudan. A jump of this size can also reflect other sectors contracting, which would leave the wider economy more dependent on farming. For the state, a large farm share means export earnings, tax revenue and food import bills all move with crop and livestock conditions.
