In plain words

$24.6bn

What it is. Nominal GDP adds up the value of everything produced in Benin in a year, priced at current market prices and converted into US dollars. Because it uses current prices, it rises with real output, with inflation and with any strengthening of the CFA franc against the dollar. It says how big the economy is in dollar terms, but nothing about how that output is shared out, and it leaves out unrecorded activity that is common in informal trade and farming.

Higher is better. A larger figure is better because a bigger economy gives households, firms and the state more to spend, save and tax. The latest figure for 2025 is $24.6bn, up from $21.5bn a year earlier, a rise of 14.4%. That is also the highest level since 2016, when the figure was $11.8bn. Over that span the economy has roughly doubled in dollar terms.

Why it matters. A larger dollar economy gives the state a wider base for tax revenue and makes foreign debt easier to carry relative to income. For firms, it means a bigger home market and more scope to attract investors and lenders. Households see the benefit only if the growth reaches wages and jobs, which national totals cannot show.
