In plain words

$21.5bn

What it is. Nominal GDP adds up the value of everything produced in Chad in a year, at that year's prices, and converts the total into US dollars at that year's exchange rate. The figure rises with real output, with price increases and with the strength of the local currency against the dollar. It leaves out the spread of income between households and values informal and subsistence activity only by estimate.

Higher is better. Higher is better because a larger dollar economy means more income to earn, spend and tax, and more capacity to pay for imports and foreign debt. The latest figure, for 2025, is $21.5bn, up from $19.9bn a year earlier, a rise of 7.9%. That is the highest level since 2016, when the series stood at its low of $13bn. Over the whole span since 2016 the economy has grown by a wide margin in dollar terms.

Why it matters. A bigger dollar economy gives the Chadian state a wider base to tax and makes imports, fuel debt service and foreign borrowing easier to carry relative to national income. Firms sell into a larger market, and the $1.6bn added in a year is the extra income that wages, profits and public budgets share. Because the figure is in current prices, part of any rise can reflect higher prices, so households may feel less of the gain than the headline suggests.
