In plain words
$27.6bn
What it is. Nominal GDP adds up the market value of everything produced in Burkina Faso in a year, valued at current prices and converted into US dollars. Because prices and the exchange rate are built into it, the figure moves with inflation and with the CFA franc's value against the dollar as well as with real output. Unpaid household work, much informal activity and the way income is shared among people sit outside the total.
Higher is better. A higher figure means a bigger pool of income from which households earn, firms sell and the state collects taxes and services dollar debts. The latest figure, for 2025, is $27.6bn, up from $23.1bn a year earlier, a rise of 19.4%. Since 2016 the lowest level was $12.8bn, recorded in 2016, and the highest is the current $27.6bn, so the economy sits at the top of its range for the period.
Why it matters. At $27.6bn, the state has a larger dollar base from which to raise revenue and repay external loans, and imported goods such as fuel and machinery take up a smaller share of national income. Firms and foreign investors see a bigger market measured in dollars. Because the total is spread across the whole population and shifts with the exchange rate, the 2025 jump will reach household budgets only to the extent that prices and wages follow.
