In plain words

$19.9bn

What it is. Nominal GDP adds up the market value of everything produced in Botswana in a year, priced at that year's prices and converted into US dollars. Because it is measured in dollars at current prices, it moves with inflation and with the pula's exchange rate as well as with real output. It leaves out unpaid household work and gives no indication of how income is shared between people.

Higher is better. A higher figure is better because a larger dollar economy means more income to earn, spend, tax and invest, and more capacity to pay for imports. The latest figure is $19.9bn for 2025, up $0.64bn, or 3.3%, from $19.3bn a year earlier. Since 2016 the series has ranged from a low of $15bn in 2020 to a high of $20.3bn in 2022. The 2025 figure therefore sits close to the top of that range, a little under the 2022 peak.

Why it matters. For households, an economy of $19.9bn is the pool from which wages, profits and public services are paid. For firms, the dollar value of the domestic market has recovered from the 2020 low and is nearly back at its 2022 level. For the state, the figure sets the size of the tax base against which budgets and foreign-currency obligations are measured.
