In plain words

$3.4bn

What it is. Nominal GDP adds up the value of everything produced in Burundi in a year, priced at that year's prices and converted into US dollars. Because the conversion uses exchange rates, a weaker franc can shrink the dollar figure even when output in local terms grows. The measure says nothing about how income is shared or how many people share it.

Higher is better. A higher figure is better because a larger economy has more income to spend, tax and invest. Burundi's nominal GDP stood at $3.4bn in 2025, up from $3bn a year earlier, a rise of $0.33bn or 10.8%. Since 2016 the range runs from a low of $2.6bn in 2016 to a high of $4bn in 2022. The latest figure therefore sits well above the bottom of that range and still below the 2022 peak.

Why it matters. At $3.4bn, Burundi's economy is small in dollar terms, so a fixed dollar import bill or external debt payment takes a large share of national income. The recovery from 2024 gives the state a somewhat larger base to tax and gives firms a bigger domestic market. The 2022 level of $4bn is the figure to watch for a return to the earlier size.
