In plain words

$3.1bn

What it is. Nominal GDP adds up the market value of everything produced in Cabo Verde in a year, priced at current levels and expressed in US dollars. Because prices are current, the figure rises with inflation and moves with the exchange rate as well as with the volume of output. It leaves out how income is shared between people and the value of unpaid work, so a higher total says little about any single household.

Higher is better. A larger total means more income is being generated in the economy, which gives households, firms and the state more to spend, save and tax. The latest figure for 2025 is $3.1bn, up from $2.7bn a year earlier. That is a rise of $0.34bn, or 12.6%. Since 2016 the lowest level was $1.8bn in 2020, and the highest is the latest figure of $3.1bn. The economy therefore sits at the top of its range for the period.

Why it matters. A dollar economy of $3.1bn gives the state a wider base from which to collect taxes and makes debt and deficits easier to carry when they are measured against national income. For firms, the larger total points to a bigger domestic market than in 2020, when the figure was $1.8bn. Households benefit only to the extent that the growth reaches wages and jobs, which GDP itself does not show.
