In plain words

$5.2bn

What it is. Nominal GDP adds up the value of everything produced in Eswatini in a year and expresses it in US dollars at that year's prices and exchange rates. Because the lilangeni is pegged to the South African rand, the dollar figure moves with the rand's value against the dollar as well as with real output and price changes. It says nothing about how income is shared or about unpaid and informal work that never reaches the accounts.

Higher is better. A larger figure means a bigger economy in dollar terms, which gives households, firms and the state more income to spend, save and tax. Eswatini's latest figure is $5.2bn for 2025, up from $4.9bn a year earlier, a rise of 6.2%. That is the highest level since 2016, when the figure was $3.7bn and the lowest in the window.

Why it matters. A $5.2bn economy is small, so a single large employer, a swing in receipts from the regional customs union or a weaker rand can move the total noticeably. A higher dollar total widens the base the government can tax and makes imported fuel, food and machinery easier to pay for. It does not show how much of the gain reaches household budgets.
