In plain words
$126.4bn
What it is. Nominal GDP adds up the value of everything produced in Ethiopia in a year, priced at current levels and converted into US dollars. The conversion means the dollar figure moves with the exchange rate as well as with output, so a weaker local currency pulls the total down. It leaves out price changes over time and says nothing about how income is shared between households.
Higher is better. A higher figure means a larger economy in dollar terms, which gives the country more room to pay for imports and to carry foreign debt. The latest figure, for 2025, is $126.4bn, down from $149.7bn a year earlier. That is a fall of $23.4bn, or 15.6%. Since 2016 the series has ranged from a low of $68.5bn in 2016 to a high of $149.7bn in 2024, so the latest figure sits well above the starting point and below the peak set a year earlier.
Why it matters. A smaller dollar economy makes foreign-currency debt and imported goods heavier relative to what the country produces. Households see this when imported fuel, medicine and machinery cost more in local currency. For the state, a smaller dollar GDP raises the weight of any debt owed in dollars. Whether the 2024 peak of $149.7bn is regained is the figure to check next.
