In plain words

$2.6bn

What it is. Nominal GDP adds up the value of all goods and services produced in The Gambia over a year, priced at current market prices and converted into US dollars. Because it uses today's prices and the dalasi to dollar exchange rate, both inflation and currency moves change the total. Unpaid household work and much informal trading are hard to count and so sit largely outside the figure.

Higher is better. A higher figure means a larger economy in dollar terms, with more income to earn, spend and tax, so a rise is good news. The latest figure for 2025 is $2.6bn, up $0.19bn from $2.4bn a year earlier, a gain of 7.9%. Since 2016 the series has ranged from a low of $1.5bn in 2016 to a high of $2.6bn in 2025. The latest reading therefore sits at the very top of its range for the period.

Why it matters. A larger dollar economy gives the government a bigger base to tax and makes external debt easier to carry. For households, it points to more income in circulation in a country that buys much of its food and fuel abroad. The 2025 level is the highest in the period since 2016, though the total is still small beside most economies, so the average person's gain depends on how fast prices and the population grow.
