In plain words

$114.2bn

What it is. Nominal GDP adds up the value of all goods and services produced in Ghana in a year, at the prices of that year, and converts the total into US dollars. Because it uses current prices and the prevailing exchange rate, the figure moves with inflation and with the cedi's value against the dollar as well as with real output. It leaves out unpaid household work and the distribution of income.

Higher is better. A higher figure is good because a larger economy in dollar terms has more income to spend, tax and save, and more capacity to service debts owed in foreign currency. The latest figure, for 2025, is 114.2 USD bn, up from 83.3 USD bn a year earlier, a rise of 37.1%. Since 2016 the series has ranged from a low of 56.1 USD bn in 2016 to a high of 114.2 USD bn in 2025. The latest reading therefore sits at the top of its range for that span, roughly double its starting level.

Why it matters. A dollar economy of 114.2 USD bn gives the state a bigger base against which to measure its foreign-currency debt and its tax take. Firms that earn in cedis see their sales worth more in dollars when the series rises, which matters for those that import inputs or borrow abroad. The gain of 30.9 USD bn in one year is the figure to check against the next release, to see whether the higher level holds.
