In plain words
$2.5bn
What it is. Nominal GDP adds up the value of everything produced in Guinea-Bissau in a year and converts it into US dollars at prevailing prices and exchange rates. The figure moves with output, with price changes and with the dollar value of the CFA franc, which the country shares with its West African neighbours. Cashew exports dominate the economy, so a good or bad harvest and the world cashew price can shift the total noticeably. Informal farming and trade are hard to count and may be only partly captured.
Higher is better. A larger economy means more income to spend, save and tax, so a higher figure is better, though the measure does not show how evenly that income is shared. The latest figure for 2025 is $2.5bn, up from $2.2bn a year earlier, a rise of 15%. That is the highest level since 2016, when it stood at its low of $1.2bn. Output in dollar terms has roughly doubled over that span.
Why it matters. At $2.5bn, Guinea-Bissau has one of the smaller economies in West Africa, so the public budget, which depends heavily on cashew-related revenue and foreign aid, is small in absolute terms. A 15% rise in a year gives the state somewhat more room to pay wages and fund roads, schools and clinics. For households, the gain depends on cashew prices and on whether growth reaches farming families in the countryside as well as traders in Bissau.
