In plain words
$135.9bn
What it is. Nominal GDP adds up the value of everything produced in Kenya in a year, priced in current shillings and then converted into US dollars. Because of the conversion, the figure moves with the exchange rate as well as with output and prices, so a weaker shilling can shrink it even in a year of real growth. It says nothing about how income is shared, or about unpaid work and informal activity that official statistics capture only partly.
Higher is better. A larger figure means a bigger economy in dollar terms, which gives more room to earn, tax, spend and repay dollar debts, so higher is better. The latest figure, for 2025, is 135.9 USD bn, up from 120.4 USD bn a year earlier, a rise of 12.9%. It is the highest in the window since 2016, when it stood at 74.8 USD bn, its lowest point. No peer ranking is given for this series.
Why it matters. At 135.9 USD bn, Kenya's economy is much larger in dollar terms than it was in 2016, which makes dollar debts and imported fuel and goods easier to carry relative to national output. A rise of 15.5 USD bn in a year does not by itself mean higher incomes for every household, since population growth and uneven pay spread it thinly. For the state, a larger dollar economy widens the base for tax revenue and eases the weight of external debt repayments measured against output.
