In plain words
$48.1bn
What it is. Nominal GDP adds up the market value of everything produced inside Libya in a year, priced at current rates and converted into US dollars. The total moves with inflation and the exchange rate as well as with the volume of output. Unpaid work and informal activity fall outside it, and the total gives no indication of how income is divided between households.
Higher is better. A larger figure means a bigger pool of income that can be earned, taxed and spent, and more capacity to pay for imports. The latest figure is $48.1bn for 2025, down 0.8% from $48.5bn a year earlier. Since 2016 the range runs from a low of $35.2bn in 2021 to a high of $76.7bn in 2018. The latest figure sits well below the 2018 peak and closer to the 2021 low than to that peak.
Why it matters. At $48.1bn, the Libyan economy is far smaller in dollar terms than at its 2018 peak of $76.7bn. That limits the dollar sums the state can raise and spend, and what firms and households can afford to import. The next annual figure will show whether the slight dip from $48.5bn continues or reverses.
