In plain words
$14.9bn
What it is. Nominal GDP adds up the value of everything produced in Malawi in a year, priced at current market prices and converted into US dollars. Because it uses current prices and the prevailing exchange rate, the dollar total moves with inflation and with the kwacha as well as with real output. It leaves out the volume of production on its own, and it says nothing about how income is shared among households.
Higher is better. A higher figure is better because a larger dollar economy means more income and output available to spend, save and tax, and it makes external obligations easier to carry. The latest figure, for 2025, is $14.9bn, up from $11.3bn a year earlier. That is a rise of $3.6bn, or 31.9%. Since 2016 the series has ranged from a low of $7.9bn in 2016 to a high of $14.9bn, so the latest reading is the top of its range over that span.
Why it matters. A bigger dollar economy gives Malawian households and firms more room to pay for imported goods such as fuel, fertiliser and medicines. For the state, debt and import bills are judged against the size of the economy, so a larger dollar GDP makes those ratios look lighter. The 2025 level is a jump of almost a third in one year, and later annual figures will show whether it holds.
