In plain words
$11.7bn
What it is. Nominal GDP adds up the value of everything produced inside Mauritania in a year, priced in current US dollars. Because it is converted at prevailing exchange rates and uses current prices, it moves with inflation and with the ouguiya's value against the dollar as well as with real output. Unpaid household work and much informal activity are only partly captured, which matters in an economy with a large informal sector.
Higher is better. A larger figure means the economy is producing and selling more, measured in dollars, which gives the country more capacity to spend, import and repay foreign debt. The latest figure, for 2025, is $11.7bn, up from $10.9bn a year earlier, a rise of 7.4%. Since 2016 the low was $6.4bn, and the 2025 figure is also the highest in that span, so the economy sits at the top of its own range.
Why it matters. A bigger dollar economy gives the state a wider base for taxes and mining and fishing royalties, and it eases the weight of external debt relative to output. For households, the headline figure says little about how income is shared, so living standards depend on how much of the $11.7bn reaches wages and local spending. Firms that import fuel, food and equipment gain from a larger dollar economy only if the ouguiya holds its value.
