In plain words
$16.2bn
What it is. Nominal GDP adds up the value of everything produced in Mauritius in a year at prices of that year, then converts it into US dollars. Because it is measured in dollars, it moves with the rupee's exchange rate as well as with output and prices. It says nothing about how income is shared or how big the economy is per person.
Higher is better. A larger figure means a larger economy in dollar terms, which gives the country more capacity to earn, spend and repay debts abroad. The latest figure for 2025 is $16.2bn, up from $14.9bn a year earlier, a rise of 8.2%. That is the highest level since 2016, and the lowest in the same span was $11.6bn in 2020.
Why it matters. A bigger dollar economy makes imports, foreign debt and overseas costs easier to carry for the state and for firms that buy fuel, food and machinery abroad. For households, the extra $1.2bn of output over the year gives room for higher incomes and tax revenue, though the figure on its own does not show who benefits.
