In plain words
$22.3bn
What it is. Nominal GDP adds up the value of everything produced in Mozambique in a year, priced at that year's prices and converted into US dollars. Because it is measured in current dollars, it moves with output, with domestic price changes and with the metical's exchange rate against the dollar. It leaves out unpaid household work and says nothing about how income is shared, and informal activity is only partly captured.
Higher is better. A higher figure means a larger pool of income and output to spend, tax and use for repaying dollar debts, so higher is better. The latest figure, for 2025, is $22.3bn. That is down from $22.8bn a year earlier, a fall of $0.41bn or 1.8%. Since 2016 the series has ranged from a low of $12.1bn in 2016 to a high of $22.8bn in 2024. The latest reading therefore sits close to the top of its range, just under the 2024 peak.
Why it matters. For households and firms, a dollar economy of $22.3bn sets the scale of what the country can buy abroad and earn from its own output. A dip in dollar terms makes imported goods and external debt payments weigh somewhat more heavily against national income. The state's dollar-valued tax base also shrinks when the figure falls, which matters for budget planning.
