In plain words
$290.8bn
What it is. Nominal GDP adds up the value of everything produced in Nigeria in a year and states it in current US dollars. Naira output is converted at the exchange rate, so the dollar total moves with the currency as well as with real activity. Prices are not adjusted for inflation, and informal activity is captured only to the extent that statisticians can estimate it.
Higher is better. A larger dollar economy means more income and output to share among a growing population and a bigger base for taxes and imports, so higher is better. The latest figure is 290.8 USD bn for 2025, up from 252.3 USD bn a year earlier, a rise of 15.3%. Since 2016 the series has ranged from a low of 252.3 USD bn in 2024 to a high of 668.2 USD bn in 2019. The latest reading therefore sits just above the bottom of its range and well below the peak. The facts give no peer rank for this series.
Why it matters. At 290.8 billion dollars, the economy is much smaller in dollar terms than it was in 2019, which matters for a country that pays for fuel, machinery and many foodstuffs in foreign currency. Households feel this through the purchasing power of the naira, and firms through the cost of imported inputs. The state's dollar debt obligations also weigh more heavily against a smaller dollar economy, so the recovery of 38.5 USD bn in the latest year is a relief to be checked against the next annual figure.
