In plain words

$16.4bn

What it is. Nominal GDP adds up the market value of everything produced inside Rwanda in a year, priced in current US dollars. Because it is converted at the going exchange rate and uses current prices, it moves with real output, with inflation and with the strength of the Rwandan franc against the dollar. It says nothing about how the income is shared or about unpaid work and informal activity that never reaches official accounts.

Higher is better. A larger figure means a bigger economy in dollar terms, which gives the country more capacity to pay for imports, service foreign debt and fund public spending. The latest figure, for 2025, is $16.4bn, up from $15.1bn a year earlier, a rise of $1.3bn or 8.3%. Since 2016 the low was $8.6bn, so output measured in dollars is now close to double its starting level. The 2025 reading is also the highest in that span.

Why it matters. For households, a larger economy in dollar terms usually means more room for wages, jobs and public services, though the figure on its own does not show who benefits. For firms, it points to a bigger domestic market and a stronger base for borrowing in foreign currency. For the state, a $16.4bn economy widens the tax base against which external debt and budget deficits are measured.
