In plain words
$37bn
What it is. Nominal GDP adds up the value of everything produced in Senegal in a year, priced at that year's prices and converted into US dollars. It moves with real output, with inflation and with the exchange rate, so a stronger or weaker CFA franc against the dollar changes the figure even when the economy produces the same amount. It covers formal and estimated informal activity but says nothing about how income is shared or what is left after debt costs.
Higher is better. A higher figure means a larger economy in dollar terms, which gives the country more capacity to earn, spend and repay what it owes in foreign currency. Senegal's latest figure, for 2025, is $37bn, up from $32.2bn a year earlier, a rise of $4.8bn or 15%. That is the highest level since 2016, when the series stood at its low of $19bn. Output in dollar terms has therefore risen to almost twice its starting level over the window.
Why it matters. A larger economy in dollars widens the base from which the state collects taxes and services its external debt, so debt ratios measured against GDP look lighter for a given borrowing total. For firms and households, the figure does not show whether incomes have kept pace with prices. Part of the 2025 jump may reflect price and currency effects, so real growth and inflation figures are the next thing to check.
