In plain words

$13bn

What it is. Nominal GDP adds up the value of all goods and services produced in Somalia in a year, priced at current market prices and expressed in US dollars. Because prices are current, the figure rises with inflation as well as with real output, and the dollar conversion brings exchange rates into it. It leaves out how income is shared between households and the value of unpaid household work.

Higher is better. A higher figure is good because a bigger economy means more income to spend and save, and a wider base for the state to tax. Somalia's latest figure, for 2025, is $13bn, up $1bn from $12bn a year earlier, a rise of 8.6%. That is the highest level since 2016, and it sits at the top of the range for that span. The lowest figure over the same span was $6.6bn, recorded in 2016. Because the measure is in current prices, part of the rise can reflect higher prices rather than more output.

Why it matters. At $13bn, Somalia's economy supplies a larger pool of income for households, traders and firms than at any point since 2016. For the state, a bigger economy widens the base from which customs and other revenues are raised. The same dollar figure also tracks price movements, so households' purchasing power depends on how far the 8.6% rise reflects real activity.
