In plain words

$90.1bn

What it is. Nominal GDP adds up the value of everything produced in Tanzania in a year, priced at that year's prices and converted into US dollars. Because the sum is in current dollars, it rises with real output, with price increases and with any strengthening of the shilling against the dollar. Informal and unrecorded activity enters only through estimates, and the total says nothing about how income is shared between households.

Higher is better. A higher figure is better because it means a larger flow of output and income in the economy. The latest figure is $90.1bn for 2025, up from $79.2bn a year earlier, a rise of 13.8%. That is the highest level since 2016, when the series stood at its lowest point in the window, $49.8bn. The economy is now measured at well above its starting size in the window.

Why it matters. A larger dollar economy gives the state a bigger base from which to collect taxes and to carry debt owed in foreign currency. Firms sell into a bigger market, and importers and lenders see a country with more income to support trade. How far this reaches an individual household depends on how the extra output is shared and on prices in the shops.
