In plain words
$62bn
What it is. Nominal GDP adds up the value of everything produced in Uganda in a year, at the prices of that year, and converts the total into US dollars. The dollar figure therefore moves with real output, with price rises and with the value of the shilling against the dollar. Informal activity is hard to capture in full, and the total gives no view of how income is shared among households.
Higher is better. A larger figure means more income is being earned, spent and available for taxes and investment, so higher is the favourable direction. The latest reading for 2025 is $62bn, up from $53.9bn a year earlier. That is a rise of $8.1bn, or 15%. The figure is the highest since 2016, and the low for that span was $29.2bn in 2016.
Why it matters. A bigger dollar economy gives the state a wider base to tax and makes dollar-denominated debt smaller relative to national output. Firms that sell to a growing domestic market have more demand to serve, and importers of fuel and machinery deal in an economy that is larger when measured in dollars. Because the figure also responds to the exchange rate, the 2025 jump is worth checking against real growth and the shilling's movement over the same year.
